For a first Apistogramma, a well-established captive-bred cockatoo line is often the more straightforward starting point in this guide. Agassizii is rated intermediate because its range of origins and breeding demands deserves closer attention. Neither label excuses a water mismatch. Read the targets below and confirm the conditions used by the supplier of the actual fish.
Choose the silhouette
Cacatuoides offers a pronounced dorsal crest; agassizii has a more slender outline and often a strongly extended male tail. Both have ornamental color strains. Those labels describe appearance or breeding lines, not new species. Use appearance to choose between already suitable candidates, rather than allowing a favorite color to override the aquarium’s limitations.
Display or breeding project?
Both require sheltered spawning space and a plan for brood-related aggression. A peaceful community may be a display option for appropriate captive-bred stock, while fry production is easier to manage in a dedicated aquarium. Agassizii of wild origin can demand much more specific breeding water than a domestic cockatoo line.
The practical decision
Choose cacatuoides when its source, water history and temperament fit your first setup. Choose agassizii when you can investigate provenance and meet its needs consistently.
